Services Provided at Shrewsbury House
Accommodation and independence training programme:
Each Resident has their own room for which they are responsible for the upkeep of. The rest of the house is communal with a well equipped kitchen, living room and bathrooms.
Each Resident will have an agreement that details the areas in which they need to focus upon in terms of developing independence skills. The areas include all aspects of an individuals development in becoming an active citizen, i.e., practical skills such as cooking, laundry, budgeting, cleaning, etc.; social and emotional development such as forming appropriate relationships, communication and problem solving; and economic independence such as developing future plans for education, training and ultimately employment. Residentscan also supported in undertaking life story work.
Each Resident will have a keyworker. Together they will devise the targets for acquiring the identified skills in the independence plan by weekly meetings and monthly reviews. The Resident and their keyworker will agree when the required skills have been developed and plans will then be made for the Resident to move on. A monthly report will be sent to funding authorities detailing progress made.
Services for Young Parents:
Shrewsbury House also take placements for Young People and their babies/young child. A cot/child’s bed, toys, equipment, etc. need to be provided for these placements – there is safety equipment (i.e. fire guard, stair gates) in the communal area of the house. Services for young parents will be the same as for single people, with additional input given in relation to developing safe parenting skills.
Twenty Four-Seven will not supervise a Young Parent with their child - they will offer high support to them, to assist them in developing good enough parenting skills, as well as independence skills for themselves.
Staff are trainied to be aware of child protection issues, and any concerns will be reported to funding authorities immediately.
Parenting assessments for the Courts and/or Local Authorities can be carried out in conjunction with Gawber Road Residential Family Centre at additional cost. The assessment would be coordinated by a qualified, experienced Social Worker; Shrewsbury House staff would support and guide the parents, and Gawber Road staff would coordinate and undertake the assessment.”
