Shrewsbury House is located in Penistone, South Yorkshire, and is less than a 5-minute walk from the town centre. Penistone is a medium sized market town that has the benefits of a range of amenities whilst maintaining a close rural identity.
Penistone is easily accessible by train, road and bus, which will enable Young People to easily maintain important contacts away from the town. The train station is a two-minute walk from Shrewsbury House and Penistone is a 15-minute journey from the M1. There is also a regular bus service giving access to all local towns and villages, in addition to Sheffield and Meadowhall.
A health centre is located almost next door to the property and the Doctors, Opticians and Dentist are located in the town centre. The town has a cinema, restaurants, take-aways, sports centre, and a small shopping centre with super markets. There is a local Youth Centre with a Connexions centre attached.
For Young People remaining in education, the local school has a sixth form college which has recently been invested in to provide alternative packages for Young People. Barnsley Education Authority promotes a full and varied educational programme through its college, and there are many local courses available for Young People at the Community Centre etc. Penistone has many local employers and businesses, and links are made with local employers.
A key philosophy of the project is for Young People to be able to develop skills in being good citizens, and close links have been established within the community to enable this to occur.
Shrewsbury House has a lower ground floor, ground floor, and first floor. The property consists of 5 lockable rooms, one of which can accommodate a parent and child. Each room is comfortably furnished with individual fridges and food storage in each room. Young People are encouraged to personalise their rooms, and are responsible for the up keep of their rooms.
Communal areas include a large entrance hall, a shared kitchen with a dining area, and a lounge. The kitchen is fully equipped, and the dining area and lounge are well furnished. Equipment such as television, video and audio equipment is provided for communal areas.
A payphone and Computer, located in the kitchen area, are available for use by the Young People.
There is a shower room on the ground floor and a bathroom on the first floor, each having a washbasin and w.c. A separate w.c is available on the first floor. Laundry facilities are available on the lower ground floor. The property has a garden, and facilities for staff car parking. A public car park is located next to the property.
Part of the first floor of the property forms living accommodation for staff, and there are also offices, one of which is used as a meeting room, on the lower ground floor.
