Shrewsbury House - The Young Person

Shrewsbury House is suitable for Young People, male and female, aged 16 years+. It is particularly suitable for Young People who are in the process of ‘Leaving Care’, and who are not equipped, either emotionally and/or practically, to live independently. Two of the Managers are undertaking training in British Sign Language and consideration would be given to working with young people who are deaf and who either lip read and/or use BSL. We are also experienced at working with young people with a mild to moderate learning disability, and as such Shrewsbury House is also suitable for these Young People.

Staff are experienced at working with young people with a mild to moderate learning disability, and with excellent move on facilities, it would be possible to offer a longer term supported accommodation package to such young people to assist with a smooth transition into adulthood (subject to funding). The accommodation is also suitable for young people who are deaf and who can lip read and/or use BSL. Currently the Registered Manager is undertaking Level “ in BSL and we would be committed to further training for all staff should a deaf young person be admitted. Facilities are available for Young Parents with a baby or young child, for situations in which the parent requires intensive support.

The project is not suitable for Young People with a history of recent offending, or substance misuse problems. We have developed programs for young people with literacy problems to ensure they can fully participate in the independence program.

The project would benefit Young People that have a high to medium dependency level, who require support to be available at any time. The Young People should be motivated to move onto independence and participate in a structured programme to enable this to occur. This may include addressing the following areas, but if additional needs were identified, these would be included:

· Education, employment or training schemes;
· Independent living skills in practical areas: cooking, hygiene, cleaning, shopping, laundry, etc.;
· Looking after themselves: health appointments, healthy diet, exercise, personal hygiene, safety in the home and
. first aid etc.;
· Budgeting;
· Leisure activities;
· Behavioural issues;
· Identity issues (including life story work);
· Social Skills, including communication, problem solving etc.
· Relationships; (including parenting for Young Parents);
· Accessing services;
· Basic household maintenance;
· Group meetings and responsibilities to others;
· Emotional Support;
· Participation in community projects.

A handbook is available for Young People and can be requested via e-mail, telephone or post.
